Drabble: Marriage

Marriage

The candles were burnt down to almost nothing, the sound of a quill going across parchment filling the whole cave with the incessant sound of scratching. Papers and empty ink bottles were piled around Muse, the blonde looking overworked and strung out like too little canvas spread over a frame. She had been working for a day and a half on a book, having gotten the idea all at once, and just couldn’t stop until it was done.

Howl had come home about half way into it, had asked her if she wanted a break, but had only gotten a mumble in reply. The man had been so tired himself from shepherding clouds and errant winds that he had collapsed into bed. When he had woken up, he had thought that Muse would have been beside, and could have treated himself to some early morning cuddles. But she wasn’t there. A quick walk to her usual work space, and he found her in the same position he had left her in, nose nearly touching the paper and hands stained with in. He walked over to her, looking over all the papers around her.

"Muse?"

"Meh."

He leaned in, and put his hands on her shoulders. “I think… You should take ah break,” he quietly suggested. She paused, straightening up to look at him, concern written all over her face.

"What?! No, I can’t, I need to finish this!!"

"Have yah even eaten at all?"

"What?"

Howl gently started to encircle his arms around her, guiding her little body out of her seat. “Okay, c’mon, yah need ta rest, let’s go…”
Muse faintly struggled, reaching out towards her papers. “Nooooo, let me just-!”
"No. Now, c’mon, missy, yah need ta get in bed. Preferably with me."

Muse looked at him reprovingly as he scooped her up, folding her arms and pouting at him.  She didn’t fight him though, the exhaustion starting to really hit her.

”That doesn’t sound like rest at all, hypocrite,” she said, making a face at him.

He grinned at her. “Ahaha, I wasn’t thinkin’ ‘bout that,” he teased. “I was gonna make yah some tea, but if what yah really want is me…”
"The tea will be fine, thanks."
He laughed at her, the happy sound reverberating through his chest into her. Muse relaxed in his arms, quickly fading as being up for two days started to really hit her. By the time they got to the bedroom, she had nodded off, head leaned up against him. Howl set her down on the bed, and climbed in after her, nuzzling against his tired wife.
